Indications
- Treatment of roundworm infection (Ascaris lumbricoides)
- Treatment of hookworm infections (Necator americanus, Ancylostoma duodenale)
- Treatment of pinworm infection (Enterobius vermicularis)
- Treatment of whipworm infection (Trichuris trichuria)
- Treatment of threadworm infection (Strongyloides stercoralis)
- Enhanced cellular immune response in humans
Pharmacology
- Paralyzes intestinal worms
- Enhances cellular immune responses
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended single administration
- Dosing based on age groups (1-4 years, 5-15 years, 16 years and over)
- Suggested second standard dose for severe hookworm infection
Interaction
- May increase toxicity of phenytoin
- Increases bioavailability of ivermectin
- Decreases bioavailability of albendazole
- Alcohol causes disulfiram-like reaction
Contraindications
- No absolute contra-indication

- Encephalopathy-like syndrome reported in few patients

- No teratogenic effects in animal studies
- Benefits should be weighed against possible dangers during pregnancy
Precautions & Warnings
- No evidence of sedation
- Mild and transient giddiness as infrequent side-effect
- No precautions related to ability to drive or operate machinery
- Transient fever may occur in case of concurrent microfilaraemia
Overdose Effects
- Counter anticholinesterase activity with e.g. atropine
- Control blood pressure and respiration
- Avoid sedatives
