Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
Pharmacology
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Inhibition of the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Correlation with asthma and allergic rhinitis pathophysiology
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage for adults and adolescents 15 years of age and older: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage for pediatric patients 6 to 14 years of age: Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage for pediatric patients 2 years to 5 years of age: Montelukast 4 mg tablet once daily
- Use in the pediatric patient: safety and efficacy established in studies
Interaction
- Administered with other therapies used in asthma treatment
- No clinically important effects on various drugs' pharmacokinetics
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component
Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, headache, nausea
- Uncommon: Anxiety, dizziness, muscle complaints
- Rare: Angioedema, hallucination, memory loss
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses placenta in animals, caution in use during pregnancy
- Caution needed in nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Not for reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication should be available
- Not to be abruptly substituted for corticosteroids
Overdose Effects
- No adverse experiences in majority of reports
- Supportive measures in case of overdose
