Indications
- Adjunct in the treatment of parkinsonism

Description
- Exerts direct inhibitory effect on parasympathetic nervous system
- Relaxing effect on smooth musculature
Pharmacology
- Non-selective muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist
- Higher affinity for central muscarinic receptors in cerebral cortex
Dosage & Administration
- Initial low dose, gradually increased
- Individualized dosage
- Preferably given before or after meals based on patient reaction
Interaction
- Additive effects with cannabinoids, barbiturates, opiates, and alcohol
- Increased sedative effects with concurrent use of alcohol or other CNS depressants
- May intensify anticholinergic effects of monoamine oxidase inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants

- Hypersensitivity to trihexyphenidyl
- Narrow angle glaucoma

- Typical central symptoms of atropine intoxication
- Recognition of peripheral signs of parasympathetic blockade
- Neuropsychiatric signs such as delirium, disorientation, seizures
- Treatment involves symptomatic and supportive therapy
