Pharmacology

  • Imidazoline derivative sympathomimetic amine
  • Direct agonist at α-adrenoceptors
  • Rapid and long acting vasoconstriction effect
  • Reduces blood flow and diminishes mucosal swelling
  • Improves airway potency and nasal sinus drainage

Dosage

  • Oxymetazoline nasal spray for adults and children
  • Oxymetazoline nasal spray for elderly
  • Oxymetazoline nasal drop for adults and children
  • Oxymetazoline nasal drop for children 2-5 years of age

Administration

  • Shake the bottle gently before use
  • Insert the nasal applicator into nostril
  • Tilt head forward slightly while spraying
  • Breathe in through nose while spraying
  • Clean the nasal spray at least once a week

Interaction

  • Contradicted with MAO inhibitors use
  • Avoid use within 14 days of ceasing MAO inhibitor treatment

Contraindications

  • Patients with cardiovascular disease
  • Patients with hyperthyroidism
  • Patients with prostatic enlargement
  • Patients with angle closure glaucoma
  • Patients with hypersensitivity to any ingredients

Side Effects

  • Local irritation
  • Dryness of mouth and throat
  • Burning or stinging sensation
  • Sneezing
  • Increase in nasal discharge

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Safety during pregnancy not established
  • Not thought to constitute a hazard during pregnancy and lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Avoid contact with eyes
  • Do not use for longer than seven days without medical advice
  • Frequent or prolonged use may worsen nasal congestion
