Indications
- Treatment of nasal congestion associated with acute or chronic rhinitis
- Treatment of nasal congestion associated with common cold
- Treatment of nasal congestion associated with sinusitis
- Treatment of nasal congestion associated with upper respiratory allergies
- Treatment of nasal congestion associated with epistaxis
- Treatment of nasal congestion associated with hay fever

Pharmacology
- Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride is an imidazoline derivative sympathomimetic amine
- Direct agonist at α-adrenoceptors
- No action on β-adrenoceptors
- Produces rapid and long acting vasoconstriction of the arterioles
- Reduces blood flow and swelling of the mucosa
- Improves airway potency and nasal sinus drainage
Dosage
- Adults and children (6 years of age and older): 2 or 3 sprays in each nostril twice daily for 3-5 days
- Elderly: No need for dosage reduction
- Children below 6 years of age: Not suitable for use
- Adults & children 6 years of age: 2-3 drops of 0.05% Nasal Drops in each nostril twice daily
- Children 2-5 years of age: 2-3 drops of 0.025% Nasal Drops in each nostril twice daily
Administration
- Shake the bottle gently and remove the dust cover
- Hold the spray with forefinger and middle finger on either side of the nozzle and thumb underneath the bottle
- Clear nostrils by gentle nose blowing
- Insert nasal applicator into open nostril, tilt head forward slightly, and keep the spray upright
- Breathe in through nose and press the white-collar of nasal applicator firmly down once to release a spray
- Repeat steps for consecutive doses
- Clean the nasal spray at least once a week by washing the applicator and dust cover in warm water and allowing to air dry
Interaction
- Should not be given to patients being treated with MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of ceasing such treatment
Contraindications
- Patients with cardiovascular disease
- Patients with hyperthyroidism
- Patients with prostatic enlargement
- Patients with angle closure glaucoma
- Patients with hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Local irritation
- Dryness of the mouth and throat
- Burning sensation
- Stinging sensation
- Sneezing
- Increase in nasal discharge
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety during pregnancy and lactation has not been established
- Not thought to constitute a hazard during those periods
Precautions & Warnings
- Keep away from the eyes
- Do not use for longer than seven days without medical advice
- Frequent or prolonged use may cause nasal congestion to recur or worsen
Overdose Effects
- Local irritation
- Rebound congestion
- Treatment need only be symptomatic
