Indications

  • Reduction in Post-Prandial Hyperglycaemia (PPHG)
  • Immunotherapy for non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients
  • Combination therapy with other Oral Hypoglycaemic Agents (OHAs)
  • Prevention of onset of type 2 diabetes mellitus in impaired glucose tolerance
  • Use in glycogen storage disease
  • Prevention of hypoglycaemia in non-diabetic Hyperinsulinemia
  • Prevention of hypoglycaemic attacks in steroid-induced diabetes mellitus

Description

  • Selectively inhibits α-glucosidase in the enteric canal
  • Delays the digestion and absorption of carbohydrate
  • Suppresses sharp increase in post-prandial plasma glucose

Mode of Action

  • Inhibits membrane-bound intestinal alpha-glucosidases
  • Blocks pancreatic alpha-amylase
  • Reduces the rate of digestion of complex carbohydrates
  • Decreases current blood glucose levels
  • Small reduction in hemoglobin-A1c level

Dosage & Administration

  • Orally administered in a single dose of 0.2 mg, 3 times a day
  • Dose may be increased up to 0.3 mg if necessary
  • Special caution in children and elderly patients

Interactions

  • Careful administration when co-administered with antidiabetic drugs
  • Drugs enhancing the hypoglycaemic action
  • Drugs diminishing the hypoglycemic action

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Voglibose or any excipients
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic pre-coma
  • Severe infection, serious trauma
  • Gastrointestinal obstruction or predisposition

Side Effects

  • Diarrhoea, loose stools, abdominal pain
  • Constipation, loss of appetite, nausea
  • Vomiting, heartburn, increased gas
  • Intestinal obstruction symptoms

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Safety not established in pregnancy
  • Not recommended for lactating and nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients receiving other antidiabetic drugs
  • Careful administration in various pathological conditions
  • Special attention in patients with hepatic or renal dysfunction

Use in Special Populations

  • Poorly absorbed after oral doses
  • Renal excretion is negligible

Overdose Effects

  • Transient increase in flatulence
  • Diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort
  • No serious systemic reactions expected
