Dosage
- For Allergic Rhinitis: Adults and children 12 years and older - Tablet: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg once daily or 180 mg once daily
- For Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria: Adults and children 12 years and older - Tablet: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg once daily or 180 mg once daily
Mode of Action
Fexofenadine is an 'inverse agonist' of the H1 receptor, stabilizing the inactive form and preventing downstream effects of histamine binding
Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria
Interaction
- No interaction with omeprazole observed
- Coadministration with erythromycin or ketoconazole leads to 2-3 times increase in fexofenadine level in plasma
Contraindications
- Patients with known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Common: headache, drowsiness, dizziness
- Uncommon: fatigue
- Frequency not known: hypersensitivity reactions, insomnia, nervousness, tachycardia, palpitations, diarrhea, rash
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy unless clearly necessary
- Not recommended for breastfeeding mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Administered with care in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Patients with a history of or ongoing cardiovascular disease should be warned about associated adverse reactions
Use in Special Populations
- Renal impairment: Starting dose of 60 mg once daily recommended
- Elderly patients: Altered pharmacokinetics observed in individuals over 65 years of age
Overdose Effects
Reported effects include dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth
