Indications
- Treatment of androgenic alopecia in males and females
- Stabilisation of hair loss in patients with androgenic alopecia
- Treatment of alopecia areata
Pharmacology
- Stimulates hair growth
- Increases oxygen, blood, and nutrients supply to the hair follicle
- Widens blood vessels
- Inhibits androgen hormone affecting hair follicles
- Absorption rate through the skin
- Excretion in the urine
Dosage & Administration
- Applied to clean and dry hair and scalp
- Twice-daily application at 12-hour intervals
- Total daily application dose should not exceed 2 ml
- Should remain on the scalp for about 4 hours before washing
- Should not be massaged into the scalp
- Should not be mixed with any hair oil
- Should not be used more than two times a day
- Should not be taken orally or applied to any other part of the body
- Hands should be washed immediately if applied with the fingertips
- May require 4 months or more for evidence of hair growth
- Should be used for not less than 45 days to arrest hair fall
- Particular strength may be selected based on the severity of hair loss or type and extent of baldness
Interaction
- Should not be used with other topical agents known to alter the stratum corneum barrier such as tretinoin or dithranol
- Theoretical possibility of absorbed Regenox potentiating orthostatic hypotension caused by peripheral vasodilators
Contraindications
- Patients with cardiac abnormalities
- Children below 18 years of age
- Patients using occlusive dressings or other medicines on the scalp
- Patients with red, inflamed infection, or irritated or painful scalp (including psoriasis & sunburn)
Side Effects
- Minor dermatological reactions
- Dermatitis or hypertrichosis may occur
- 0.1-5% incidence
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Should not be used during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- More likely to cause scalp irritation
- Use should be stopped if scalp irritation continues or worsens
Overdose Effects
- Increased systemic absorption may occur if higher-than-recommended doses are applied to larger surface areas of the body or areas other than the scalp
- No known cases of overdosage resulting from topical administration
- Signs and symptoms would primarily be cardiovascular effects associated with sodium and water retention, and tachycardia
- Fluid retention can be managed with appropriate diuretic therapy
- Clinically significant tachycardia can be controlled by administration of a beta-adrenergic blocking agent
