Pharmacology
- Combination of two antacids (Calcium carbonate and Sodium bicarbonate) and an alginate (Sodium alginate)
- Neutralizes excess stomach acid
- Forms a protective barrier over the stomach contents
- Physical mode of action
- Rapid reaction with gastric acid
- Forms a raft of Alginic Acid gel
- Reduces esophageal acid exposure
- Floats on the stomach contents
- Impedes gastro-esophageal reflux
- Protects the esophagus from Acid, Pepsin, and Bile
- Entaps bile and pepsin within its structure
- Raft may be refluxed into the esophagus
- Demulcent effect
- Increases relief from indigestion and heartburn
Dosage & Administration
- Oral suspension for adults and children over 12 years
- Oral suspension for children 6 to 12 years
- Chewable Tablet for adults and children 12 years and over
- Chewable Tablet for children under 12 years
- Oral suspension dosage after meals and at bedtime
- Chewable Tablet dosage after meals and at bedtime
- Dosage not recommended for children under 6 years
- No dose modifications necessary for elderly
- Caution for highly restricted salt diet in renal insufficiency patients
Interaction
- Time-interval of 2 hours between Gavipres intake and other medicinal products
- Potential interactions with Tetracyclines, Digoxine, Fluoroquinolone, Iron salt, Ketoconazole, Neuroleptics, Thyroid Hormones, Penicillamine, beta-blockers, Glucocorticoid, Chloroquine, Biphosphonates, Estramustine
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to active ingredients or excipients

Pregnancy & Lactation
- No malformative nor feto/neonatal toxicity
- Can be used during pregnancy if clinically needed
- No effects on breastfed newborns/infants
- No negative effect on parental or offspring fertility or reproduction
Precautions & Warnings
- High sodium content (254.5 mg in 20 ml dose)
- Care needed in treating patients with hypercalcaemia, nephrocalcinosis, and recurrent calcium containing renal calculi
- Not generally recommended for children under 12 years except on medical advice
- High in sodium, caution for highly restricted salt diet
- Caution in patients with impaired renal function/insufficiency and hypophosphatemia
Overdose Effects
- Symptomatic treatment for overdose
- Abdominal distension may occur
