Description
- Vitamin D3 supplement for maintaining healthy bones and teeth, preventing rickets, osteomalacia, and osteoporosis.
Indications
- Prevention and treatment of Vitamin D3 deficiency
- Prevention of pre-eclampsia during pregnancy
- Boosting immunity
Pharmacology
- The active form of Vitamin D3, Calcitriol, binds to Vitamin D receptors for calcium and phosphate absorption
- Fat-soluble with a half-life of about 50 days
- Absorbed in the small intestine and metabolized to 25-hydroxy Vitamin D3 in the liver
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 40000 IU once weekly for 7 weeks for deficiency treatment; 1400-2000 IU/day for maintenance
- Children dosage: 20000 IU once every 2 weeks for 6 weeks for deficiency treatment; 20000 IU every 6 weeks for prevention
Interaction
- Interferes with drugs like Magnesium containing Antacids, Digoxin, Thiazide Diuretics, Corticosteroids, etc.
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in diseases associated with hypercalcemia
- Hypersensitivity to Vitamin D3 or its class of medicines
- Evidence of Vitamin D3 toxicity
Side Effects
- Rarely includes anorexia, lassitude, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, weight loss, headache, thirst, etc.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safe use up to 4000 IU during pregnancy
- Excreted in breast milk with no observed infant overdoses
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitor plasma-calcium concentration for patients receiving high doses
- Consult healthcare practitioner before supplementing for specific conditions or medication use
