Indications

• Reduces blood sugar levels
• Oral antidiabetic medicine
• Type 2 diabetes Mellitus in adults
• Inadequate response to diet, exercise, and weight loss

Pharmacology

• Stimulates insulin release
• Facilitates Ca+2 transport
• Decreases hepatic glucose output
• Potentially useful hematological properties

Dosage & Administration

• Usual initial dose of 40 to 80 mg daily
• Maximum dosage of 320 mg daily in divided doses
• Can be taken before meal
• Modified release preparation
• Can be taken with food and non-alcoholic drinks
• Recommended daily dose of one to four tablets
• For oral use
• Dosing adjustment based on blood and urine sugar levels

Interaction

• Possible interactions with other oral antidiabetics, GLP-1 receptor agonists, insulin, antibiotics, beta-blockers, ACE-inhibitors, antifungals, corticosteroids, and more
• May interact with medicines containing alcohol
• Potential interaction with medicines that reduce blood clotting such as warfarin

Contraindications

• Allergy to gliclazide or related medications
• Insulin-dependent diabetes (type 1)
• Presence of ketone bodies and sugar in urine
