Indications
- Treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Pharmacology
- Selective inhibition of the pre-synaptic nor-epinephrine transporter
- Well-absorbed after oral administration
- Eliminated primarily by oxidative metabolism through the cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) enzymatic pathway
Dosage & Administration
- Initiation and maintenance dosages for children, adolescents, and adults
- No evidence from controlled trials for optimal treatment duration in ADHD
Interaction
- Slower titration with CYP2D6 inhibitor medicines
- Incompatibility with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
- Cautious use with anti-hypertensive drugs and vasopressor agents
- Potential interaction with tricyclic antidepressants
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Atomoxetine
- Incompatibility with MAOIs
- Risk in patients with narrow angle glaucoma
- Contraindicated in severe cardiovascular disorders, symptomatic cardiovascular diseases, uncontrolled hyperthyroidism, phaeochromocytoma
Side Effects
- Common and uncommon adverse reactions, including changes in blood pressure and heart rate, abdominal pain, rash, dyspepsia, fatigue, and more
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B3
- Excretion in rat milk, caution in nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Observation of suicidal ideation and behaviour
- Possible association with aggressive behaviour or hostility
- Consideration for patients with a history of seizures
- Monitoring of cardiovascular effects
Overdose Effects
- Reported symptoms and signs of overdose, including gastrointestinal symptoms, somnolence, dizziness, tremor, abnormal behaviour, hyperactivity, agitation, sympathetic nervous system activation, seizures, and QT prolongation
