Indications
- Bronchial asthma
- Bronchospasm
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component
Pharmacology
Doxophylline is a novel bronchodilator that selectively inhibits phosphodiesterase 4, relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, and has decreased affinities toward adenosine A1 and A2 receptors.
Dosage & Administration
- Elderly: 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Adults: 400 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Children: >12 years of age: 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Children: 6-12 years of age: 6-9 mg/kg body weight two times daily
- Doxophylline SR tablet to be taken once daily if required daily dose is 400 mg
Interaction
Avoid administration with other xanthine preparations, limit consumption of caffeine-containing beverages and food, and exercise caution with concurrent administration of certain drugs.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Hypotension
- During lactation

Pregnancy & Lactation
Use of the drug during pregnancy should be carefully evaluated case by case, and the drug is contraindicated during lactation.
Precautions & Warnings
Caution in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension, the elderly, severe hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, chronic corpulmonale, congestive heart failure, liver disease, peptic ulcer, and renal impairment.
Overdose Effects
May include severe cardiac arrhythmias and tonic-clonic seizure; a symptomatic treatment of cardiovascular collapse should be instituted.
