Indications

  • Relief of signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis
  • Relief of signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis

Pharmacology

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
  • Exhibits anti-inflammatory properties
  • Exhibits analgesic properties
  • Exhibits antipyretic properties
  • Prodrug that undergoes hepatic biotransformation

Dosage & Administration

  • Available in 500 mg & 750 mg tablet
  • Available in 1000 mg tablet
  • Recommended starting dose: 1000 mg as a single dose with or without food
  • Maximum daily dose for chronic treatment: 2000 mg
  • Caution for patients with moderate or severe renal insufficiency
  • Not established for pediatric use

Interaction

  • NSAIDs may diminish antihypertensive effect of ACE-inhibitors

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to nabumetone or its excipients
  • Not for patients with asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions to aspirin or other NSAIDs
  • Contraindicated for peri-operative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal: diarrhea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, constipation, flatulence, nausea, vomiting
  • Central Nervous System: dizziness, headache, fatigue, insomnia
  • Dermatologic: pruritus, rash
  • Special Senses: tinnitus
  • Miscellaneous: edema

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category C
  • Not recommended during the third trimester of pregnancy
  • Not recommended for nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Associated with renal papillary necrosis and abnormal renal pathology in animals
  • Second form of renal toxicity often associated with NSAIDs
  • Greater risk in patients with impaired renal function, heart failure, liver dysfunction, those taking diuretics, and the elderly

Overdose Effects

  • Symptoms include lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain
  • Rare occurrences of hypertension, acute renal failure, respiratory depression, and coma
  • No specific antidotes
