Dosage & Administration

Interaction

  • Additive effects with cannabinoids, barbiturates, opiates, and alcohol

  • Increased risk for tardive dyskinesia during concomitant administration with neuroleptics

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Trihexyphenidyl
  • Narrow angle glaucoma

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended during pregnancy unless need clearly established
  • Caution advised during lactation due to potential suppression of lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Gonioscope evaluation prior to initiation of therapy
  • Close monitoring of intraocular pressures
  • Caution in hot weather and concomitant use with other atropine-like drugs
  • Potential occurrence of anhidrosis and hyperthermia
  • Potential occurrence of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS)

Overdose Effects

  • Central symptoms of atropine intoxication
  • Neuropsychiatric signs
  • Hyperpyrexia, coma, cardiac and respiratory arrest
  • Gastric lavage or methods to limit absorption recommended for acute overdose
