Indications
- Treatment of dementia of the Alzheimer's type
- Indicated for other types of dementia
Pharmacology
- Action as a low to moderate affinity NMDA receptor antagonist
- Well absorbed after oral administration
- Linear pharmacokinetics
- Excreted predominantly unchanged in urine
- Terminal elimination half-life of 60-80 hours
- Highly absorbed with peak concentrations in 3-7 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended maintenance dose of 20 mg/day for adults and older patients
- Upward titration with 5 mg per week over 3 weeks
- Dosage guidelines for different weeks
- Instructions for missed dose
- Dosage adjustment for renal impairment
- No dosage adjustment for mild or moderate hepatic impairment
- Not recommended for use in children under 18 years
Interaction
- Enhancement of effects of L-dopa, dopaminergic agonists, and anticholinergics
- Reduction of effects of barbiturates and neuroleptics
- Modification of effects of antispasmodic agents with possible dosage adjustment
- List of medications not to be used concomitantly
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity to Memantine Hydrochloride or any excipients
Side Effects
- Frequent side effects including hallucination, confusion, dizziness, headache, and fatigue
- Occasional side effects such as anxiety, hypertonus, vomiting, bladder infections, and increased sexual drive
- Slight chance of increasing probability of epileptic seizures
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to fetus
- Caution advised when administered to a nursing mother
