Indications
- Early treatment of recurrent herpes labialis (cold sores)
- Reduces likelihood of ulcerative cold sores
- Shortens lesion healing time in adults and children
Pharmacology
- Inhibits Herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2)
- Selective affinity for the enzyme thymidine kinase (TK)
- Stops replication of herpes viral DNA through competitive inhibition, incorporation into viral DNA chain, and inactivation of viral DNA polymerase
Dosage & Administration
- Topically applied 5 times per day for 5 days
- Therapy should be initiated as early as possible after the first signs and symptoms
Contraindications
- No known contraindication
Side Effects
- Local skin reactions like drying or flaking of the skin
- Burning or tingling
- Erythema
- Pigmentation changes
- Application site reactions including signs and symptoms of inflammation
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies of systemic Acyclovir in pregnant women
- Minimal systemic exposure following topical administration
- Caution in nursing women due to unknown excretion in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Not for use in the eye, inside the mouth or nose, or on the genitals
- Medical advice needed if cold sore fails to heal within 2 weeks
Use in Special Populations
- Safety and effectiveness not established in pediatric subjects less than 6 years of age
