Indications
- Treatment of anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients
- Anemia due to Zidovudine in HIV-infected patients

Description
Recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO) expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells with a 165 amino acid sequence identical to human urinary EPO
Dosage
- Evaluation of iron status before and during treatment
- Monitoring hemoglobin levels at least weekly
- Dose adjustment based on hemoglobin rate of rise and decline
- Starting dose for CKD patients on dialysis and not on dialysis
- Starting dose for Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected patients
- Dose adjustment for patients on cancer chemotherapy
Administration
- Do not shake or freeze
- Protect syringe from light
- Inspect visually for particulate matter before administration
- Discard unused portions of EPO
Interaction
Potentiated effect by simultaneous therapeutic administration of haematinic agent like ferrous sulfate
Contraindications
- Uncontrolled hypertension
- Serious allergic reactions to EPO
- Pure Red Cell Aplasia (PRCA) following EPO treatment
Side Effects
- Hypertension, arthralgia, muscle spasm, pyrexia, dizziness, vascular occlusion
- Cough, rash, injection site irritation
- Nausea, vomiting, myalgia, stomatitis, weight decrease
- Pruritus, headache, chills, deep vein thrombosis
- Fall in serum ferritin values in premature infants
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use in pregnancy only if potential benefit outweighs potential risk to fetus
- Not recommended in pregnant or lactating surgical patients participating in autologous blood predonation program
- Caution in nursing women
Overdose Effects
Can cause hemoglobin levels above desired level, managed with discontinuation or reduction of dosage and/or phlebotomy, severe hypertension observed following overdose
