Description
- A hyperosmolar laxative used for effective treatment of constipation, containing a non-absorbable disaccharide that draws water into the bowel, promotes soft stool, and accelerates bowel motion.
Indications
- Used in chronic constipation when initial dietary measures are insufficient, as well as in cases of damaged intestinal flora, gall bladder diseases, and increased blood ammonia levels
Pharmacology
- Metabolized in the colon by saccharolytic bacteria, producing low molecular weight organic acids, lowering colon pH and promoting water retention, thereby increasing peristaltic activity
Dosage administration
- For adults: initially 3-6 teaspoons daily, in long-term therapy 1.5-6 teaspoons daily. For children up to 14 years: initially 3 teaspoons daily, in long-term therapy 1-2 teaspoons daily. For infants and toddlers: initially 1-2 teaspoons daily, in long-term therapy 1 teaspoon daily.
Interaction
- No significant drug interactions reported, but the glycosidic effect of cardiac glycosides can be intensified by potassium deficiency in abuse.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to galactose or lactose, galactose-free diet, gastro-cardial symptom complex, suspected intestinal obstruction
Side effects
- Possible side effects include flatulence, cramps, and abdominal discomfort at the beginning of treatment, which can be rapidly eliminated by reducing the dose. Overdose can result in diarrhea and loss of electrolytes.
