Indications
- Nasal congestion relief
- Treatment for acute or chronic rhinitis
- Relief from common cold symptoms
- Management of sinusitis
- Alleviation of upper respiratory allergies
- Treatment for epistaxis
- Relief from hay fever
Pharmacology
- Active ingredient: Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride
- Sympathomimetic amine
- Direct agonist at α-adrenoceptors
- Produces rapid and long-acting vasoconstriction
- Reduces blood flow and diminishes mucosal swelling
- Improves airway potency
- Enhances nasal sinus drainage
Dosage
- Oxymetazoline nasal spray for adults and children (6 years and older): 2 or 3 sprays in each nostril twice daily for 3-5 days
- Oxymetazoline nasal drop for adults & children 6 years of age: 2-3 drops of 0.05% Nasal Drops in each nostril twice daily in the morning and evening
- Dosage adjustment not required for elderly
- Not suitable for children below 6 years of age
- Specific dosage for children aged 2-5 years
Administration
- Instructions for using the Nasal Spray
- Cleaning and maintenance of the nasal spray
Interaction
- Contraindicated with MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of ceasing such treatment
Contraindications
- Inadvisable for patients with cardiovascular disease
- Not recommended for those with hyperthyroidism
- Contraindicated in prostatic enlargement
- Should be avoided in angle-closure glaucoma
- Hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Potential local irritation
- Possible dryness of the mouth and throat
- Temporary discomfort e.g., burning, stinging and sneezing
- Increase in nasal discharge
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety during pregnancy and lactation not established
- Not thought to pose a hazard during these periods
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid contact with the eyes
- Use for a maximum of seven days without medical advice
- Frequent or prolonged use may cause rebound congestion
Overdose Effects
- Local irritation and rebound congestion may occur
- Symptomatic treatment recommended in case of overdose
