Description

Relieves symptoms of gastric reflux, heartburn, indigestion, and flatulence associated with gastric reflux.

Indications

Pharmacology

  • Antacids:
    • Calcium carbonate
    • Sodium bicarbonate
  • Alginate: Sodium alginate
  • Mode of Action:
    • Neutralizing excess stomach acid
    • Forming a protective barrier over the stomach contents
  • Effects: Physical action, does not depend on systemic absorption

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral Suspension:
    • Adults and children over 12 years: 10-20 mL after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day
    • Children 6 to 12 years: 5-10 mL after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day
    • Children under 6 years: Not recommended
    • Elderly: No dose modifications necessary
  • Chewable Tablet:
    • Adults and children 12 years and over: Two to four tablets after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day
    • Children under 12 years: Tablets should be given only on medical advice
  • Special Cases:
    • Hepatic Impairment: No dose modification necessary
    • Renal Insufficiency: Caution if highly restricted salt diet is necessary

Interaction

Consider a time-interval of 2 hours between Gavilac intake and the administration of other medicinal products.

Contraindications

Patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or excipients.

Side Effects

  • Constipation

  • Sensation of swelling with large doses

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy: Can be used if clinically needed, no malformative nor feto/neonatal toxicity observed
  • Breastfeeding: Safe for breastfed newborns/infants
  • Fertility: No negative effect on fertility or reproduction

Precautions & Warnings

  • High sodium content - consider in highly restricted salt diet
  • Care needed in treating hypercalcaemia and calcium-containing renal calculi
  • Not generally recommended for children under 12 years except on medical advice
  • Not for patients with phenylketonuria (due to aspartame content)
  • Mask the symptoms of other more serious underlying medical conditions
  • Not for patients with impaired renal function/insufficiency and hypophosphatemia
  • Potential for allergic reactions
