Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic tetracycline antibiotic
- Bacteriostatic antibiotic
- Broad spectrum activity
- More active against Staphylococcus aureus
- Active against penicillin-resistant strains
Dosage
- Usual dose of 200 mg on first day
- Subsequent daily dose of 100 mg for 7-10 days
- Severe infections: 200 mg daily for 10 days
- Acne: 100 mg daily
- Genital chlamydia, non-gonococcal urethritis: 100 mg twice daily for 7-21 days
Administration
- Capsules should be swallowed whole
- Take with plenty of fluid
- Take during meals while sitting or standing
Interaction
- Impaired absorption by antacids
- Impaired absorption by iron-containing preparations
- Decreased half-life by barbiturates
- Decreased half-life by carbamazepine
- Decreased half-life by phenytoin
- Rendering oral contraceptives less effective
- Potential adjustment of anticoagulant dosages
- Avoid concurrent use with penicillin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines
- Children under 8 years of age
- Pregnant women
- Lactating mothers
