Description
- Indications:
- Treatment of single and mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
- Infections resistant to other antibiotics
- Urinary, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and gonorrhea infections
- Infections in immunosuppressed patients
- Pharmacology:
- Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
- Broad spectrum of activity
- Bactericidal action through DNA gyrase interference
- Rapid and well absorption from the GI tract
- Wide distribution into body tissues and fluids
- Half-life of about 3.5 hours
- Excretion in urine
- Dosage:
- Dosage determined by severity and type of infection, patient's age, weight, and renal function
- Dosage range for adults: 100-750 mg twice daily
- Different dosage for specific infections and patient groups
- Administration:
- Instruction for use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
- Regulation of rate of administration with flow control clamp
- Duration of treatment depends upon severity of infection and clinical response
- Interaction:
- Avoid concurrent administration with certain antacids and dairy products
- Separate intake of Cipro-P from products containing magnesium, aluminum, calcium, iron, or zinc
- Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
- Side Effects:
- Gastrointestinal disturbances
- Central nervous system disturbances
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Joint pain
- Photosensitivity
- Increase in liver enzymes
- Risk of hypoglycemia and mental health adverse effects
- Pregnancy & Lactation:
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Not recommended for nursing mothers due to secretion in milk
- Precautions & Warnings:
- Use with caution in patients with CNS disorders
- Avoid concurrent administration with certain antacids and dairy products
- Use in Special Populations:
- Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population

- Seizures, hallucinations, abdominal discomfort
- Renal and hepatic impairment
- Crystalluria, haematuria, reversible renal toxicity
