Indications
- Relief of symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis
- Relief of symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic urticaria
Pharmacology
- Fexofenadine is an inverse agonist of the H1 receptor
- It does not cross the blood-brain barrier
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg once daily or 180 mg once daily
- Children from 2 to 11 years: Suspension - 30 mg or 5 ml twice daily
Interaction
- Increased level of fexofenadine in plasma with erythromycin or ketoconazole coadministration
- No interaction between fexofenadine and omeprazole observed
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine Hydrochloride or any of its ingredients
Side Effects
- Common: headache, drowsiness, nausea
- Uncommon: fatigue, diarrhea
- Rare: tachycardia, palpitations, rash, urticaria
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended unless clearly necessary during pregnancy
- Not recommended for breastfeeding mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Limited data in older people and renally or hepatically impaired patients
- Unlikely to produce an effect on the ability to drive or use machines
Use in Special Populations
- Starting dose of 60 mg once daily in patients with decreased renal function
- No effect on fertility in mice with fexofenadine hydrochloride treatment
Overdose Effects
- Dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth reported with overdose
- Maximum tolerated dose not established
