Indications
- Treatment of bronchospasm
- Prevention of bronchospasm
- Reversible obstructive airway disease
Pharmacology
- Levosalbutamol is a single isomer beta 2-agonist
- Effective bronchodilator
- Primary mechanism of action is unimpeded by (S)-salbutamol
Dosage & Administration
- Tablet: 1-2 mg three times daily for adults and adolescents above 12 years
- Tablet: 1 mg three times daily for children (6-11 years)
- Syrup: 5-10 ml three times daily for adults
- Syrup: 5 ml three times daily for children (6-11 years)
Interaction
- Caution with other short-acting sympathomimetic bronchodilators or epinephrine
- Adrenergic drugs should be used with caution to avoid cardiovascular effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to levosalbutamol or any of its components
Side Effects
- Hypocalcaemia
- Palpitation
- Fine tremors of the skeletal muscle
- Muscle cramps
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Burning substernal or epigastric pain
- Diarrhoea
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy if benefit justifies potential risk of the fetus
- Caution during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Particular caution in acute severe asthma
- Potentiated effect by hypoxia and concomitant treatment with xanthine derivatives, steroids, and diuretics
- Serum potassium levels monitoring
Overdose Effects
- Excessive beta-adrenergic stimulation
- Symptoms listed under side effects
- Emptying stomach in serious poisoning
- Administer beta-blocker with caution in patients with history of bronchospasm
