Pharmacology
- Bacitracin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis
- Active against gram-positive bacteria
- Active against some gram-negative species
- Neomycin binds to bacterial ribosome
- Inhibits protein synthesis
- Active against gram-negative aerobes
- Active against some strains of staphylococci
Dosage & Administration
- Ointment application
- Gentle cleaning before application
- Dusting powder application
- Non-sterile dusting powder
- Application up to 4 times daily
Interaction
- Bacitracin Zinc nephrotoxicity risk
- Potentiation of neuromuscular-blocking agents
- Neomycin Sulphate nephrotoxic and neurotoxic effect
- Interaction with other aminoglycosides
- Enhanced toxicity with potent diuretics
- Impairment of drug absorption
- Potentiation of acarbose effect
- Potentiation of non-depolarising muscle relaxants
- Antagonism of neostigmine and pyridostigmine effect
- Risk of hypocalcaemia with bisphosphonates
- Alteration of INR with anticoagulants
- Inactivation of oral typhoid vaccine

Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid use on large open wounds
- Avoid use on severely injured skin
- Avoid use on areas exuding large volumes of fluid
- Avoid use on perforated eardrum
- Consult physician for deep wounds, animal bites, serious burns
- Discontinue if condition persists or worsens
- Not for long-term use without physician direction
Use in Special Populations
- Suitable for children at adult dose
- Requires reduced dose in infants
- Not recommended for neonates
