Indications

  • Treatment of anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients on dialysis
  • Treatment of anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients not on dialysis
  • Treatment of anemia in HIV-infected patients treated with Zidovudine
  • Reduction of allogeneic RBC transfusions in patients undergoing elective noncardiac nonvascular surgery
  • Prevention of anemia of prematurity in infants with specific birth weight and gestational age

Description

  • Recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO)
  • Expressed in Chinese hamster ovary cells
  • 165 amino acid sequence identical to human urinary EPO
  • Apparent molecular weight of about 30,400 daltons

Dosage

  • Evaluation of iron stores and nutritional factors before treatment
  • Monitor hemoglobin levels at least weekly until stable, then at least monthly
  • Instructions for dose adjustments based on hemoglobin levels and patient response
  • Specific starting doses and dose adjustments for different patient groups

Administration

  • Preparation and administration guidelines
  • Instructions to not shake or use frozen Erythropoietin alfa
  • Visual inspection of parenteral drug products prior to administration

Interaction

  • Potentiated effect of Eporise by simultaneous therapeutic administration of a haematinic agent

Contraindications

  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Serious allergic reactions to Erythropoietin alfa
  • Patients who develop Pure Red Cell Aplasia (PRCA) following treatment with any erythropoietin

Side Effects

  • Adverse reactions in 5% of Eporise treated patients in clinical studies
  • Specific adverse reactions for patients with CKD, Zidovudine-treated HIV-infected patients, cancer patients on chemotherapy, surgery patients, and premature infants

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Lack of adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
  • Reproduction toxicology observed in animal studies
  • Specific recommendations for chronic renal failure patients and pregnant or lactating surgical patients
  • Caution advised for nursing women

Overdose Effects
