Indications

  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Manic episodes
  • Depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder
  • Maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder

Pharmacology

  • Atypical psychotropic agent
  • Dibenzothiazepine derivatives
  • Antagonist at neurotransmitter receptors
  • Unknown mechanism of action
  • Mediated through dopamine D2 and serotonin 5HT2 antagonism

Dosage & Administration

  • Administered twice daily
  • Dosage titration
  • Usual effective dose range of 300-450 mg/day
  • Maximum dose of 750 mg/day

Interaction

  • Caution with medicines causing electrolyte imbalance
