Indications
- Productive cough
- Acute and chronic inflammatory disorders of upper and lower respiratory tracts
- Inflammatory disease of rhinopharyngeal tract
- Asthmatic bronchitis
- Bronchiectasis
- Chronic pneumonia
Pharmacology
- Bronchosecretolytic effect
- Improves sputum rheology
- Liquefaction of mucus
- Reduces dyspnea
- Stimulates production of phospholipids
- Lowers superficial tension in the alveoli
- Reduces bronchial hyperactivity
- Anti-inflammatory properties
Dosage & Administration
- Pediatric Drops: 0-6 months - 0.5 ml 2 times a day
- Pediatric Drops: 6-12 months - 1 ml 2 times a day
- Pediatric Drops: 1-2 years - 1.25 ml 2 times a day
- Syrup: 2-5 years - 2.5 ml 2-3 times a day
- Syrup: 5-10 years - 5 ml 2-3 times a day
- Syrup: 10 years and adults - 10 ml 3 times a day
- Sustained release capsule: 1 capsule once daily for adults and children over 12 years old
Interaction
Should not be taken simultaneously with antitussives (e.g. Codeine)
Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or Bromhexine
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal side effects like epigastric pain
- Stomach overfull feeling
- Rare allergic responses such as eruption, urticaria or angioneurotic edema
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not advised in pregnancy, especially during the 1st trimester. Safety during lactation not established yet
Precautions & Warnings
- Should be given cautiously to patients with gastric and duodenal ulceration
- Should be given cautiously to patients with convulsive disorders
- Patients with hepatic and renal insufficiency should take with caution
