Solagen 100 mg (Chewable Tablet)

Indications

• Treatment of threadworms
• Treatment of whipworms
• Treatment of roundworms
• Treatment of hookworms

Pharmacology

• Synthetic broad-spectrum anthelmintic
• Active against most nematodes
• Inhibits formation of worms' microtubules
• Causes worms' glucose depletion
• 2-10% oral absorption from GI tract
• Peak plasma concentration within 30 minutes to 7 hours
• Highly bound to plasma protein
• Elimination half-life 2.8 to 9 hours

Dosage & Administration

• Adult and Child over 2 years
• 100 mg or 1 teaspoonful for Threadworms: Single dose
• 100 mg or 1 teaspoonful for Whipworms, Roundworms, Hookworms: Twice daily for 3 days
• Second dose may be needed after 2 weeks if reinfection occurs

Interaction

• Cimetidine inhibits Solagen metabolism
• May lead to an increase in plasma concentration

Contraindications

• Known hypersensitivity to Mebendazole or any component

Side Effects

• Transient symptoms of abdominal pain and diarrhea
• Expulsion of worms
• Rash
• Urticaria
• Angioedema
• Rare cases of convulsions
• Neutropenia
• Agranulocytosis

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Not recommended in pregnant women
• Unknown excretion in human milk
• Caution in nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

• Periodic assessment of organ system functions
• Cleanliness important to prevent reinfection & transmission
• Potential risk to the fetus in women taking Solagen during pregnancy
• Assessment of haematopoietic and hepatic functions advisable
• Consider relative benefit/risk for children under two years

Use in Special Populations

• Drug not extensively studied in children under two years

Overdose Effects

• Accidental overdosage can cause gastrointestinal complaints
• Vomiting and purging should be induced
