Description
- Indicated for treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis
- Contains Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride
- Inhibits topoisomerase II and IV
- Dosage: Eye drops and eye ointment
- Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin
- Common side effects: conjunctivitis, decreased visual acuity, dry eye, etc.
- Storage: Below 25°C, protected from light
Indications
- Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible strains of specific microorganisms
- Highly effective intraocular antibiotic to prevent postoperative bacterial endophthalmitis
Pharmacology
- Antimicrobial action results from inhibition of topoisomerase II (DNA gyrase) and topoisomerase IV
- DNA gyrase involved in replication, transcription, and repair of bacterial DNA
- Topoisomerase IV plays a key role in the partitioning of chromosomal DNA during bacterial cell division
Dosage & Administration
- Eye Drops: One drop in the affected eye 3 times per day for 7 days
- Eye Ointment: Applied thinly and evenly three times a day for the first two days, then two times a day for the next five days or as advised by physician
- Intraocular injection: Administered as 0.2-0.4 ml dose prior to ocular surgery via intraocular route
Interaction
- In vitro studies indicate no inhibition of key cytochrome P450 isozymes
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Moxifloxacin or other quinolones
Side Effects
- Common ocular adverse events: conjunctivitis, decreased visual acuity, dry eye, etc.
- Non-ocular adverse events: fever, increased cough, infection, rash, etc.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
- Caution when administered to a nursing mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi
- Discontinue use if superinfection occurs
- Examination with aid of magnification recommended
- Patients advised not to wear contact lenses with signs and symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis
