Description

  • Venterol is indicated for bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema & other lung diseases where bronchospasm is a complicating factor. It is a long-acting ß2 adrenergic receptor agonist used in the treatment of asthma.

Pharmacology

  • Bambuterol, a prodrug of terbutaline
  • Long-acting ß2 adrenergic receptor agonist
  • Stimulates ß2 receptor
  • Produces relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle
  • Inhibition of release of endogenous spasmogens
  • Inhibition of edema caused by endogenous mediators
  • Increased mucociliary clearance

Dosage & Administration

  • Children 2-5 years: 10 mg (10 ml syrup)
  • Children 6-12 years: 10-20 mg (10-20 ml syrup)
  • Adult: 10-20 mg

  • Succinylcholin
  • MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors)
  • ß2-blockers
  • Corticosteroids
  • Diuretics
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Sympathomimetic xanthine derivatives

Contraindications

  • Hepatic impairment
  • Liver cirrhosis
  • Severely impaired liver function

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Caution during first trimester of pregnancy
  • Caution during breastfeeding
  • Terbutaline passes over to breast milk but unlikely to influence the child with therapeutic doses
  • Transient hypoglycemia reported in newborn pre-term infants

Precautions & Warnings

  • Dose reduction in patients with severely impaired renal function
  • Dose reduction in patients with genetic deficiencies of plasma cholinesterase
  • Dose reduction in patients with severe ischemic heart disease

Overdose Effects

  • No reported case of bambuterol overdosage in humans
  • Symptoms & signs may include: headache, anxiety, tremor, nausea, tonic muscle cramps, palpitations, tachycardia, cardiac arrhythmias
  • Fall in blood pressure after terbutaline overdosage
  • Laboratory findings: hyperglycemia, lactic acidosis, hypokalemia
