Indications
- Reverse hypotension induced by spinal or epidural anaesthesia
Pharmacology
- Stimulant drug
- Alpha and beta adrenergic agonist
- Enhances release of norepinephrine
- Increases activity of central nervous system
Dosage & Administration
- 3 to 6 mg Ephedrine Hydrochloride for hypotension reversal
- Intravenous injection
- Maximum total dose of 30 mg
- Can be given by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection
Interaction
- May cause hypertensive crisis with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor
- Avoid or use with care in patients undergoing anaesthesia with volatile anaesthetics
- Increased risk of arrhythmias in patients receiving cardiac glycosides, quinidine, or tricyclic antidepressants
- Increased risk of vasoconstriction or pressor effects in patients receiving ergot alkaloids or oxytocin
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in presence of coronary thrombosis
- Caution in patients with organic heart disease, cardiac decompensation, hyperthyroidism, hypertension, and angina pectoris
- Caution in patients receiving digitalis

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Category C in Pregnancy
- Not recommended for use during lactation due to risk of adverse effects in the infant
Precautions & Warnings
- Care with hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, hypertension, renal impairment, or angle-close glaucoma
- May increase difficulty with micturition in patients with prostatic enlargement
- Increased fetal heart rate reported with parenteral use
- Irritability and disturbed sleep reported in breast-fed infants
