Indications
- Treatment of Foli Kidz deficiency
- Treatment of megaloblastic anemia
- Treatment of anemias of nutritional origins, pregnancy, infancy, or childhood
Pharmacology
- Conversion of folic acid to tetrahydrofolic acid and methyltetrahydrofolate
- Maintenance of normal erythropoiesis
- Synthesis of purine and thymidylate nucleic acids
- Interconversion of amino acids
- Methylation of tRNA
- Generation and use of formate
- Remethylation of homocysteine to methionine via methionine synthetase
Dosage & Administration
- Adult initial dose: 5 mg daily for 4 months
- Adult maintenance dose: 5 mg every 1-7 days depending on the underlying disease
- Children under 1 year: 500 mcg/kg daily
- Children over 1 year: Same as adult dose

- Intolerance to folic acid

- No special precautions known
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with folate-dependent tumors
- Should not be given alone or with inadequate amounts of vitamin B12 for undiagnosed megaloblastic anemia
- May precipitate the onset of subacute combined degeneration of the cord in vitamin B12 deficiency states
- Cobalamin absorption test should be done before long-term folate use in elderly individuals
- No harmful results found from short courses of folate
