Indications
- Reverse hypotension induced by spinal or epidural anaesthesia
Pharmacology
- Stimulant drug
- Sympathomimetic
- Alpha and beta adrenergic agonist
- Enhances release of norepinephrine
- Increases activity of central nervous system
Dosage & Administration
- 3 to 6 mg Ephedrine Hydrochloride for hypotension
- Slow intravenous injection
- Repeated every 3 to 4 minutes as required
- Maximum total dose is 30 mg
- Also administered by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection
Interaction
- Hypertensive crisis in patients receiving Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor
- Increased risk of arrhythmias in patients receiving cardiac glycosides
- Increased risk of vasoconstrictor effects in patients receiving ergot alkaloids
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in presence of coronary thrombosis
- Use with caution in patients with organic heart disease, hyperthyroidism, hypertension, and angina pectoris

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Category C for pregnancy
- Not recommended for use during lactation due to risk of adverse effects in the infant
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with care in patients with hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, hypertension, renal impairment, or angle-close glaucoma
