Description
- Indications: Essential for calcium and phosphate absorption, preventing rickets, osteomalacia, and osteoporosis
- Pharmacology: Active form is Calcitriol, which binds to Vitamin D receptors and increases calcium absorption
- Dosage & Administration:
- Capsule - Adults:
- 40000 IU once weekly for 7 weeks
- 1400-2000 IU/day for maintenance therapy
- Capsule - Children (12-18 years):
- 20000 IU once every 2 weeks for 6 weeks
- Film-coated Tablet: 1000 IU (1-2 tablets) daily
- Oroflash or Chewable Tablets: 1000-2000 IU daily
- Syrup:
- For patients with risk of Cholecalciferol deficiency:
- 0-1 yr: 400 IU/day
- >1 yr: 600 IU/day
- For Cholecalciferol deficient patients:
- 0-1 yr: 2000 IU/day (+50000 IU/week) for 6 weeks
- 1-18 yrs: 2000 IU/day for 6 weeks
- For patients with risk of Cholecalciferol deficiency:
- Injection - Prevention:
- Infants receiving Vitamin D enriched milk: ½ ampoule every 6 months
- Pregnancy: ½ ampoule from 6th or 7th month
- Injection - Vitamin D deficiency: 1 ampoule (1 ml) i.e. 2,00000 I.U. which can be repeated 1 to 6 months later
- Capsule - Adults:
- Interaction: Many drugs cause Vitamin D3 deficiencies and increase the need for Vitamin D3
- Contraindications: Contradicted in diseases associated with hypercalcaemia and known hypersensitivity to Vitamin D3
- Side Effects:
- Anorexia
- Nausea & vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Weight loss
- Headache
- Raised concentrations of calcium and phosphate in plasma and urine
- Pregnancy & Lactation: Safe use up to 4000 IU during pregnancy, excreted in breast milk
- Precautions & Warnings: Plasma-calcium concentration should be monitored, consult a health care practitioner in specific conditions
- Use in Special Populations: Safety & efficacy in children under 12 years have not been established
- Overdose Effects: Can lead to hypervitaminosis D
- Therapeutic Class: Vitamin in bone formation, Vitamin-D preparations
- Storage Conditions: Keep below 30º C, protected from light & moisture, keep out of the reach of children
