Treatment of hypertension
Use alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents

Pharmacology

Blocks the vasoconstrictor effects of angiotensin II by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT 1 receptor in vascular smooth muscle

Dosage & Administration

Usual recommended starting dose of 20 mg once daily when used as monotherapy
May be increased to 40 mg for further reduction in blood pressure after 2 weeks of therapy
No initial dosage adjustment recommended for elderly patients or those with moderate to marked renal impairment or hepatic dysfunction

Interaction

No significant drug interactions reported in studies with digoxin or warfarin
Bioavailability not significantly altered by antacids
No inhibition of cytochrome P450 system or effects on P450 enzymes

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any component of the product

Side Effects

Well tolerated with an incidence of adverse reactions similar to placebo
