Description

  • Rosuvastatin is a lipid-lowering medication that belongs to the statin class of drugs. It is used to reduce elevated cholesterol levels and decrease the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Indication

  • Primary hyperlipidemia
  • Mixed dyslipidemia
  • Hypertriglyceredemia
  • Dysbetalipoproteinemia
  • Homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Risk reduction of Myocardial Infarction (MI)
  • Stroke risk reduction
  • Arterial revascularization procedures

Pharmacology

  • Selective and competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase
  • Increases hepatic LDL receptors
  • Inhibits hepatic synthesis of VLDL

Dosage and administration

  • Usual dose range: 5-20 mg/day
  • Maximum recommended dose: 20 mg/day
  • Dosage individualized according to recommended goal of therapy
  • Dosage in Asian Patients: Initiating with 5 mg once daily
  • Dosage in patients with severe renal impairment: Starting dose 5 mg once daily, not to exceed 10 mg once daily

  • Discontinue therapy if markedly elevated creatinine kinase levels occur
  • Liver enzyme tests before initiation of therapy and at 12 weeks following initiation
