Indications

  • Adjunct to diet and exercise
  • Improves glycemic control
  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus

Pharmacology

  • Inhibits DPP-4 enzyme
  • Increases incretin hormones
  • Stimulates insulin release
  • Reduces glucagon levels
  • Regulates glucose homeostasis
  • Inhibits Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2)
  • Reduces renal reabsorption of glucose
  • Increases urinary glucose excretion

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended daily dose: 10mg Empagliflozin and 5mg Linagliptin
  • Can be taken with or without food
  • Dose may be increased to 25mg Empagliflozin and 5mg Linagliptin
  • Renal function assessment required before initiation

Interactions

  • Increased urine volume with diuretics coadministration
  • Risk of hypoglycemia with insulin or insulin secretagogues
  • Reduced efficacy with inducers of P-glycoprotein or CYP3A4 enzymes

Contraindications

  • Severe renal impairment
  • Hypersensitivity reaction to Linagliptin or Empagliflozin
