Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by sensitive bacteria
- Pharyngitis/Tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes

Pharmacology
- Bactericidal second generation cephalosporin antibiotic
- Active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative susceptible organisms
- Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by interfering with the transpeptidation process
- Clavulanic acid provides protection of Cefuroxime from degradation by beta lactamase enzymes
Dosage & Administration
- 250 mg b.i.d. for adolescents and adults
- 20 mg/kg/day b.i.d for paediatric patients (3 months to 12 years)
- Can be taken without regard of food
Interaction
- Probenecid increases the area under the serum concentration versus time curve by 50%
- Drugs that reduce gastric acidity may result in lower bioavailability
Contraindications
- Known allergy to cephalosporin
- Pseudomembranous Colitis

- Overgrowth of nonsusceptible microorganisms with prolonged administration
- Renal dysfunction (rare)
- Anaphylaxis (rare)

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoid in first trimester if possible
- Can be used in later pregnancy to treat urinary and other infections
- Excreted into the breast milk in small quantities
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with care to patients receiving concurrent treatment with potent diuretics
- Use caution in patients with history of colitis
