Indications

Pharmacology

  • Povidone Iodine is a complex of iodine and an organic polymer
  • Rapid microbicidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
  • Sporicidal
  • Non-staining and active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water

Dosage & Administration

  • Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days for the treatment of infection
  • Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary for the prevention of infection
  • Apply full strength as often as needed as paint, spray, or wet soak
  • Use undiluted or diluted with an equal volume of warm water for gargle & mouthwash
  • 1 drop 4 times daily or as required for ophthalmic solution

Interaction

  • Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
  • Hypothyroidic effect in concurrent lithium therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
  • Avoid in severely burnt patients and children under the age of 2 years

Side Effects

  • Hypersensitivity reactions
  • Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
  • Systemic adverse effects such as metabolic acidosis and hypernatraemia in severe burns or large denuded skin areas
  • Interference with thyroid function tests

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy
  • Usually compatible with breastfeeding (as per American Academy of Pediatrics)
  • Not recommended for use in pregnant and lactating women, except for compelling reasons
  • No experience regarding safety in human pregnancy or lactation for povidone eye drops

Precautions & Warnings

  • Special caution in case of deep or puncture wounds, serious burns, or broken skin
  • Avoid prolonged use leading to iodine absorption
  • Avoid use in children under 6 years of age
  • Avoid regular use in patients on concurrent lithium therapy
  • Caution required for patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
  • Caution required in patients with known iodine sensitivity
  • Patients experiencing blurred vision after application should not drive or use machinery
  • Contact lenses should not be worn during instillation
