Indications
- Treatment of primary or secondary topical infections
- Infected surgical incisions
- Infected decubitus or stasis ulcers
- Pyodermas
- Secondarily infected dermatoses
- Infected traumatic lesions
- Prevention of microbial contaminations in burns
- Preventing infections in abrasions, minor cuts, and wounds
- Treatment of surface infections and seborrhea
- Preoperative and postoperative scrubbing and washing
- Preoperative prepping of operative site, including the vagina
- Disinfection of wounds, burns, lacerations, and abrasions
- Prophylactic anti-infective agent in house, hospital & office procedures
- Postoperative application to incisions to help prevent infection
- Treatment of oral moniliasis (thrush), and bacterial and mycotic skin infections
- Treatment of dry eye conditions including keratoconjunctivitis sicca
Pharmacology
- Povidone Iodine is a complex of iodine and an organic polymer
- Rapid microbicidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and fungi/yeasts
- Sporicidal
- Non-staining and active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucosal secretions, and water
Dosage & Administration
- Apply once or twice daily for a maximum of 14 days for the treatment of infection
- Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary for the prevention of infection
- Apply full strength as often as needed as paint, spray, or wet soak
- Use undiluted or diluted with an equal volume of warm water for gargle & mouthwash
- 1 drop 4 times daily or as required for ophthalmic solution
Interaction
- Exhibits interaction with strong alkali, sodium thiosulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and thiomersal
- Hypothyroidic effect in concurrent lithium therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Regular use in patients with thyroid disorders or receiving lithium therapy
- Avoid in severely burnt patients and children under the age of 2 years
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
- Systemic adverse effects such as metabolic acidosis and hypernatraemia in severe burns or large denuded skin areas
- Interference with thyroid function tests
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy
- Usually compatible with breastfeeding (as per American Academy of Pediatrics)
- Not recommended for use in pregnant and lactating women, except for compelling reasons
- No experience regarding safety in human pregnancy or lactation for povidone eye drops
Precautions & Warnings
- Special caution in case of deep or puncture wounds, serious burns, or broken skin
- Avoid prolonged use leading to iodine absorption
- Avoid use in children under 6 years of age
- Avoid regular use in patients on concurrent lithium therapy
- Caution required for patients with pre-existing renal insufficiency
- Caution required in patients with known iodine sensitivity
- Patients experiencing blurred vision after application should not drive or use machinery
- Contact lenses should not be worn during instillation
