Description
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Montelukast inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Indicated for prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma, acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB), relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage: 5 mg tablet for 6-14 years, 4 mg tablet for 2-5 years and 6 months-5 years, oral granules for 6 months-5 years
Hepatic Insufficiency
- No dosage adjustment required in patients with mild-to-moderate hepatic insufficiency
Renal Insufficiency
- No dosage adjustment recommended in patients with renal insufficiency
Elderly use
- Similar pharmacokinetic profile and oral bioavailability as in younger adults, no dosage adjustment required
Interaction
- Administered with other therapies routinely used in asthma treatment with no apparent increase in adverse reactions
- No clinically important effects on the pharmacokinetics of theophylline, prednisone, oral contraceptives, terfenadine, digoxin, and warfarin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the product
Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions
- Uncommon: Anxiety, depression, dizziness, dry mouth, muscle complaints
- Rare: Angioedema, disorientation, memory loss, palpitations, tremor
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Crosses placenta in rats and rabbits, caution advised during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Not indicated for reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Caution required in patients with known aspirin sensitivity
Overdose Effects
- Usual supportive measures recommended in case of overdose
