Description

• Sodium Picosulfate is a triarylmethane group derivative stimulant laxative used for the treatment of constipation

Indications

• Constipation of any etiology
• Relief from prolonged & recurrent constipation
• Bowel clearance before surgery, childbirth or radiological investigations.

Pharmacology

• Activated by colonic bacteria
• Promotes water and electrolyte accumulation in the colon
• Stimulates intestinal wall nerve endings for colonic peristalsis

Dosage & Administration

• Oral administration
• Recommended to be taken at night for evacuation the following morning
• Start with lowest dose and adjust up to the maximum recommended dose for regular stools

Interaction

• Concomitant use of diuretics or adreno-corticosteroids may increase risk of electrolyte imbalance
• Concurrent administration of antibiotics may reduce the laxative action

Contraindications

• Ileus or intestinal obstruction
• Severe painful and/or feverish acute abdominal conditions potentially associated with nausea and vomiting
• Acute inflammatory bowel diseases
• Severe dehydration
• Known hypersensitivity to Sodium Picosulfate
