Dosage and Administration

  • Recommended dosage: 0.25 mg twice a week
  • Dosage may be increased by 0.25 mg twice weekly
  • Maximum dosage: 1 mg twice a week
  • Dosage increases not more rapidly than every 4 weeks
  • Dosage for lactation prevention: 1 mg tablet on first day after delivery
  • Dosage for lactation cessation: 0.25 mg tablet every 12 hours for two days
  • Dosage to reduce prolactin levels in other conditions: Initially take one 0.5 mg tablet, spread out over a week
  • Maximum dosage up to 4.5 mg

Indications

  • Stop breast milk production soon after childbirth, stillbirth, abortion or miscarriage
  • Stop lactation if do not want to continue breastfeeding
  • Treat conditions caused by hormonal disturbance resulting in high prolactin levels

Description

  • Group of drugs called dopamine receptor agonists
  • Reduces the amount of prolactin released from the pituitary gland
  • Treats hormone imbalance with high prolactin in the blood (hyperprolactinemia)

Mode of Action

  • Dopamine receptor agonist
  • Reduces prolactin secretion by the anterior pituitary
  • Exerts a direct inhibitory effect on prolactin secretion by pituitary lactotrophs
  • High affinity for D2 receptors
  • Low affinity for dopamine D1, α1, α2 adrenergic and 5HT1, 5HT2 serotonin receptors

  • Liver or kidney disease
