Dosage and Administration
- Recommended dosage: 0.25 mg twice a week
- Dosage may be increased by 0.25 mg twice weekly
- Maximum dosage: 1 mg twice a week
- Dosage increases not more rapidly than every 4 weeks
- Dosage for lactation prevention: 1 mg tablet on first day after delivery
- Dosage for lactation cessation: 0.25 mg tablet every 12 hours for two days
- Dosage to reduce prolactin levels in other conditions: Initially take one 0.5 mg tablet, spread out over a week
- Maximum dosage up to 4.5 mg
Indications
- Stop breast milk production soon after childbirth, stillbirth, abortion or miscarriage
- Stop lactation if do not want to continue breastfeeding
- Treat conditions caused by hormonal disturbance resulting in high prolactin levels
Description
- Group of drugs called dopamine receptor agonists
- Reduces the amount of prolactin released from the pituitary gland
- Treats hormone imbalance with high prolactin in the blood (hyperprolactinemia)
Mode of Action
- Dopamine receptor agonist
- Reduces prolactin secretion by the anterior pituitary
- Exerts a direct inhibitory effect on prolactin secretion by pituitary lactotrophs
- High affinity for D2 receptors
- Low affinity for dopamine D1, α1, α2 adrenergic and 5HT1, 5HT2 serotonin receptors

- History of serious mental disease
- Liver or kidney disease
