Causes
- Contractions of the uterus
- Dilation and effacement of the cervix
- Stimulates smooth muscle associated with the secretory epithelium of the lactating breast
Usability
- Safe administration in cases of hypertension
- Minimal cardiovascular and antidiuretic properties
Pharmacology
- Uterine motility depends on the formation of the contractile protein actomyosin
- Oxytocin promotes contractions by increasing the intracellular Ca2+
- Oxytocin has specific receptors in the muscle lining of the uterus
Dosage & Administration
- Intravenous infusion under adequate control
- Intramuscular administration may lead to irregular response and symptoms of overdosage
- Intramuscular injection of 2-5 IU for post delivery period
- Intramuscular administration of 2 IU to stimulate lactation
- Intramuscular injection of 2-5 IU every 30-60 minutes for incomplete abortion treatment
Interaction
Severe hypertension reported when given after prophylactic vasoconstrictor administration
Contraindications
- Cephalo-pelvic disproportion
- Overdistention of the inferior segment of the uterus
- Severe toxaemia
- Hypertonic uterine dysfunction
- Foetal distress without imminent delivery
Side Effects
- Hypersensitivity may result in uterine hypertonicity
- Possibility of increased blood loss and afbrinigenemia
- Severe water intoxication with convulsions and coma
- Nausea, vomiting, haemorrhage, cardiac arrhythmias, anaphylactic reaction
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy category C. It is not known whether Oxytocin is excreted in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Linda-S should be used with care due to varying uterine sensitivity
- Should only be used when adequate medical supervision is provided
- Should be used with care in the presence of scars in the uterus and cervix uteri
Overdose Effects
Excess Linda-S may cause violent uterine contractions leading to fetal bradycardia and arrhythmias

Reconstitution
- Shown not to lose potency for at least 24 hours when diluted with specified infusion fluids
- Can be injected directly into the infusion line with certain infusion fluids
