Indications
- Bronchial asthma
- Bronchospasm
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component
Pharmacology
Doxophylline selectively inhibits phosphodiesterase 4, relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, inhibits platelet activating factor (PAF) and generation of leukotriene production
Dosage & Administration
- Elderly: 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Adults: 400 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Children:
- >12 years of age: 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
- 6-12 years of age: 6-9 mg/kg body weight two times daily
Interaction
Caution with other xanthine preparations, limit consumption of caffeine-containing beverages/food, exercise caution with ephedrine or other sympathomimetic drugs
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Hypotension
- During lactation

Pregnancy & Lactation
Contraindicated during lactation, carefully evaluated for use during pregnancy based on risk-benefit ratio
Precautions & Warnings
Caution with cardiac disease, hypertension, elderly, severe hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, chronic corpulmonale, congestive heart failure, liver disease, peptic ulcer, renal impairment
Overdose Effects
Severe cardiac arrhythmias, tonic-clonic seizure, requires discontinuation of treatment, symptomatic treatment of cardiovascular collapse
