Pharmacology
- Potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties
- Uricosuric effect
- Inhibits prostaglandin biosynthesis
- Rapid and complete absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
- Peak plasma concentrations reached within 2 hours after ingestion
- Metabolized in the liver and undergoes first pass metabolism
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage of 75-150 mg daily in 2 to 3 divided doses
- Reduction of dose in long term use
- Dosing for diclofenac SR Tablet in adults and children
- Dosing for diclofenac Dispersible Tablet in adults and children
- Dosage of diclofenac TR Capsule
- Dosage of diclofenac Suppository for adults
- Usual dosage of diclofenac injection for adults
- Application of 2-4 g of diclofenac gel to the skin 3-4 times daily
Interaction
- May interact with lithium and digoxin
- Potential interaction with anticoagulants, antidiabetic agents, cyclosporin, methotrexate, quinolone antimicrobials, other NSAIDs, and steroids
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the products
- Peptic ulcer
- Hypersensitivity to Diclofenac or other non-steroid anti-inflammatory agents
- Contra-indicated in asthmatic patients where attacks are precipitated by acetylsalicylic acid or other drugs with prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor
- Not to be used under occlusive airtight dressings
Side Effects
- Mild, rare, and transient adverse effects including epigastric pain, eructation, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, peripheral edema, skin reactions, rash, eczema, local irritation, reddening of the skin, and skin rash
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use only for compelling reasons during pregnancy
- Lowest effective dose should be used during pregnancy
- Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy
- Not recommended during lactation due to insignificant quantity detected in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Close observation in rare instances of peptic ulceration or gastrointestinal bleeding in patients under treatment
- Close observation in advanced age patients
- Avoid contact with eyes or mucus membranes
- Hands should be washed properly after application
- Not to be taken by mouth
