Indications
- Treatment of elevated intraocular pressure
- Patients with ocular hypertension
- Open-angle glaucoma
Pharmacology
- Non-selective β-adrenergic receptor blocker
- Reduction of aqueous humour formation
- Lowering of blood pressure
Dosage & Administration
- Initial dose: 1 drop of 0.25% solution bid
- May increase to 1 drop of 0.5% solution bid if inadequate response
- Decrease to 1 drop once daily if controlled
- Do not exceed 1 drop bid of 0.5% solution
Interaction
- Mydriasis with concomitant therapy with epinephrine
- Interactions with beta-adrenergic blocking agents
- Calcium antagonists
- Catecholamine-depleting drugs
- Digitalis
- Quinidine
- Clonidine
- Injectable epinephrine
Contraindications
- Bronchial asthma
- Severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Sinus bradycardia
- Second or third degree atrioventricular block
- Overt cardiac failure
- Cardiogenic shock
- Hypersensitivity to any component

- Burning and stinging sensation of the eyes
- Bradycardia
- Hypotension
- Arrhythmia and AV or SA nodal block
- CHF
- Pulmonary oedema
- Raynaud's phenomenon
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Asthenia
- Abdominal discomfort
- Nausea
- Constipation
- Hypoglycaemia
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
- Detection in breast milk
- Serious adverse reactions in nursing infants
- Consideration whether to discontinue nursing or drug
Precautions & Warnings
- Inadequate cardiac function
- Diabetes mellitus
- Myasthenia gravis
- Cerebrovascular insufficiency
- History of atopy
- Avoid abrupt withdrawal
- Exacerbation of angina symptoms
- Precipitation of MI in patients with coronary artery disease
- Precipitation of thyroid crisis in patients with thyrotoxicosis
- Patients undergoing major surgery
- Masking signs of hyperthyroidism and hypoglycemia
- Not for monotherapy for angle-closure glaucoma
- Renal and hepatic impairment
Overdose Effects
- Systemic effects similar to those seen with systemic beta-adrenergic blocking agents
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Shortness of breath
- Bradycardia
- Bronchospasm
- Cardiac arrest
