Indications
- Treatment of essential hypertension
- Treatment of secondary hypertension

Pharmacology
- Decrease in total peripheral vascular resistance
- Selective inhibition of postsynaptic alpha-1-adrenoreceptors
- Lowering of blood pressure in supine and standing positions
- Reduction in left ventricular filling pressure
- Augmentation of cardiac output
- Improvement in urinary pressure profile in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia
- No adverse changes in serum lipid profile
Dosage & Administration
- Initial therapy with low starting dose
- Adjustment of dosage according to patient's response
- Twice or thrice daily maintenance dosage for hypertension
- Titration of dosage for left ventricular failure
- Recommended starting dosage for Raynaud's phenomenon and disease
- Usual maintenance dose for benign prostatic hyperplasia
- Initiation of therapy with 2.5 mg once daily for Prazosin XR Extended-Release Tablets
Interaction
- No adverse drug interaction observed with cardiac-glycosides, hypoglycemic agents, tranquilizers and sedatives, antiarrhythmic agents, and analgesic/anti-inflammatory agents

- Not recommended for children under 12 years
- Not recommended in left ventricular failure due to mechanical obstruction

Overdose Effects
- Profound drowsiness and depressed reflexes observed in accidental ingestion by a child

- Not dialyzable because it is protein bound
