Indications

  • Treatment of essential hypertension

Pharmacology

  • Decrease in total peripheral vascular resistance
  • Selective inhibition of postsynaptic alpha-1-adrenoreceptors
  • Lowering of blood pressure in supine and standing positions
  • Reduction in left ventricular filling pressure
  • Augmentation of cardiac output
  • Improvement in urinary pressure profile in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia
  • No adverse changes in serum lipid profile

Dosage & Administration

  • Initial therapy with low starting dose
  • Adjustment of dosage according to patient's response
  • Twice or thrice daily maintenance dosage for hypertension
  • Titration of dosage for left ventricular failure
  • Recommended starting dosage for Raynaud's phenomenon and disease
  • Usual maintenance dose for benign prostatic hyperplasia
  • Initiation of therapy with 2.5 mg once daily for Prazosin XR Extended-Release Tablets

Interaction

  • No adverse drug interaction observed with cardiac-glycosides, hypoglycemic agents, tranquilizers and sedatives, antiarrhythmic agents, and analgesic/anti-inflammatory agents

Contraindications

  • Known sensitivity to quinazolines

Overdose Effects
