Description

Abicon Max is a combination of two antacids (Calcium carbonate and Sodium bicarbonate) and an alginate (Sodium alginate). It is indicated for gastric reflux, heartburn, indigestion, flatulence associated with gastric reflux, heartburn of pregnancy, and all cases of epigastric and retrosternal distress where the underlying cause is gastric reflux.

  • Pharmacology:
    • Combination of two antacids (Calcium carbonate and Sodium bicarbonate) and an alginate (Sodium alginate)
    • Neutralizes excess stomach acid to relieve pain & discomfort
    • Forms a protective barrier over the stomach contents to soothe burning pain in the chest
    • Physical mode of action, not dependent on absorption into the systemic circulation
    • Rapid reaction with gastric acid to form a raft of Alginic Acid gel with near neutral pH
    • Interacts with and caps the acid pocket in the stomach, reducing esophageal acid exposure
    • Floats on stomach contents, impeding gastro-esophageal reflux for up to 4 hours
    • Protects the esophagus from acid, pepsin, and bile
    • May exert a demulcent effect in severe cases
  • Dosage & Administration:
    • Oral suspension for adults and children over 12 years: 10-20 mL after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day
    • Chewable tablet for adults and children over 12 years: two to four tablets after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day
    • No recommended dosage for children under 6 years
    • No dose modifications for the elderly
    • Hepatic impairment: No dose modification necessary
    • Renal insufficiency: Caution if highly restricted salt diet is necessary
  • Interaction:
    • Consider 2-hour time interval between Abicon Max intake and administration of other medicinal products
    • Avoid concurrent use with specific drugs such as Tetracyclines, Digoxin, Fluoroquinolones, Iron salts, etc.
  • Contraindications:
    • Known or suspected hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or excipients
  • Side Effects:
    • Constipation
    • Flatulence
    • Stomach cramps
    • Belching
    • Sensation of swelling with big doses
  • Pregnancy & Lactation:
    • Safe for use during pregnancy if clinically needed
    • No effects shown in breastfed infants
    • No negative effect on parental or offspring fertility or reproduction
  • Precautions & Warnings:
    • Each 20 mL dose contains 254.5 mg of sodium
    • Care needed in treating patients with hypercalcemia, nephrocalcinosis, and recurrent calcium-containing renal calculi
    • Not recommended for children under 12 years except on medical advice
    • High in sodium and calcium content
    • Not recommended for patients with phenylketonuria due to aspartame content
    • Seek medical advice if symptoms persist or treatment is required for more than 7 days continuously
    • Can mask symptoms of other serious underlying medical conditions

    • Symptomatic treatment in case of overdose
    • Abdominal distension may occur
